Kickstarter.com campaign launched! Join the movement...
THE FINAL STRETCH
This film is a labor of love and has been EIGHT years in the making. I plundered my war chest to buy mics and cameras, moved to Tokyo and spent countless hours speaking broken Japanese while dodging motorbikes and cops. Sometimes in life you just have to jump in to test the water!
A CHARACTER DRIVEN DOCUMENTARY
I eventually found that special person to drive the narrative of the film, one time SPECTER gang leader Hazuki. As a diehard, ex-member Hazuki embodies the spirit of Japan's most infamous ZOKU or TRIBE. BOSO means speed or joyriding and BOSOZOKU gangs are both cherished reviled in Japan. Like most BOSOZOKU gangsters he's tough, sometimes clownish and endearing in his dedication to keep BOSOZOKU tradition alive.
As his own gang SPECTER dwindles in numbers Hazuki must carve out a place for himself in Japanese society. But where does he fit in? Can he let go of his precious gang?
So many questions... some answers .... many surprises.
WHY KICKSTARTER?
For the sake of creative control I've held out on funding the film via companies or grants; thus far the film has been self financed.
What changed?
Knowing that if I raise the funds through KICKSTARTER I can still retain
FINAL CUT on the film for a start...
Also, timing....the current budget has been spent.
After discovering some amazing archival footage of the BOSOZOKU from the 70's and employing some talented artists to work on the MANGA-MATION (animated manga comics - seen in the video) I realized that these are the finishing touches I have been looking for and the film is screaming for more sequences.
Production is finished (WATCH THE VIDEO) and post-production is well underway, but the rough cut needs a desperate infusion of funds to polish up the film and get it out there while maintaining an INDY vision. If you're still reading this then you know what I'm talking about...
PROGRESS...
I am halfway through making the MANGA-MATION covering the history of the characters and BOSOZOKU culture. These sequences are not cheap, but they are doable under a tight budget. Plus...
I need to pay musicians, fees for archival footage and for final processing.
This campaign has given me hope that I can finally achieve the kind of film I have been working so hard to bring to the screen. As a result, I have worked hard to set up QUALITY REWARDS only available by joining the "Sayonara Speed Tribes" Kickstarter campaign.
PLEASE HELP ME GET THE MESSAGE OUT AND SHARE THIS UNIQUE SIDE OF JAPAN WITH THE WORLD!
